G Scale Trains

G scale trains are manufactured by a number of different companies throughout the world. You may notice some variation in size, as some manufacturers actually use different scales.
This larger size of model railway was introduced by LGB, Lehmann Gross Bahn, in 1968. In German, gross bahn means big train. LGB has changed over the years, going through at least one bankruptcy, but the brand is still available. Since 2007, it has been produced by Marklin.

The original LGB ratio was 1:22.5. This is the ratio currently used by Marklin and Hartland Locomotive Works. The Bachmann Big Haulers series are crafted using a ratio of 1:22.5, as well. Other manufacturers use ratios ranging from 1:20 to 1:32.

When you compare a 1:20 piece to one that was created using the 1:32 ratio, you can see a difference in the size. All of the pieces will run on the same track, which is a standard 45mm gauge. So, you can use pieces from different manufacturers successfully.

The difference is most noticeable when you are comparing passengers, crew and other non-train pieces side by side. Different sized pieces can be arranged apart from each other in order to avoid the “over-sized” appearance.

LGB G scale trains have always had a reputation for durability. They were the first of the garden railways. They are durable enough to be displayed and stored outdoors in all kinds of weather.

LGB tracks are made of brass. Care and maintenance is a simple matter of wiping down the track when it is ready to use.

Less expensive tracks are constructed of aluminum. The most expensive tracks are constructed of rust-resistant stainless steel. Stainless steel tracks are harder to find. Only a few manufacturers produce them, usually by special order.

Most US manufacturers use a ratio of 1:20.3 when designing their G scale trains. The look is very similar to that of the 1:22.5, which is the standard for manufacturers in Europe.

If you would like something a little larger for your garden, Wrightway Rolling Stock, Aster, Marklin MAXI and MTH Rail-king brands are all constructed using a 1:32 ratio. Accucraft has four scales, including 1:29, which is used in their live steam and electric AML railways.

You can find pieces of any size and brand on eBay. There is simply nowhere to get a better price today. Some people decide to give up the hobby after a while. You will find huge sets of G scale trains at auction because of their decisions. Whether you are just starting out or expanding your set, eBay is definitely the place to start shopping.
